The University of Michigan (UM) Ross School of Business is gearing up for a day packed full of high-profile talks from c-suite guests this coming Friday, November 21.

The headline-grabber is Twitter CEO, Dick Costolo, who will be at the Ross School to lead a Q&A style event on the relationship between social media, technology and the economy.

The student-organized event, put together by members of the Phi Chi Theta business and economics fraternity, comes approximately a year after Dick Costolo, Twitter CEO since 2010, took the company onto the stock market.

It is thought that Costolo’s stake as Twitter CEO rose by US$345 million after the company’s stocks outperformed expectations at its IPO (initial public offering). However, in February of this year its share price fell sharply following publication of its first quarterly earnings report since going public, amid concerns that its growth was slowing and that its share price had risen too far too quickly.

Dick Costolo, a UM graduate in computer science, gave the university’s commencement address in 2013 and recently singled out Lena Dunham, the writer and actress behind the HBO series, Girls, for having a social media approach he greatly admires.

Prior to the Twitter CEO’s appearance, two further talks are taking place at the same location – the Ross School’s Blau Auditorium – for those with an interest in careers in marketing or consultancy.

President and CEO of the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), Rich Lesser, is giving a talk followed by a Q&A session arranged jointly by the Ross School and UM’s engineering school – from which Lesser graduated.

BCG is a consistent MBA employer for most leading schools in the US, and Ross is no different in this respect – six MBAs were hired on a full-time basis and eight as interns by BCG in 2014, according to the Ross School’s latest employment report, although more Ross graduates took consultancy jobs this year with Deloitte, McKinsey and Accenture.

Rounding off the day’s activities is a morning keynote address for the Ross School’s annual marketing symposium. The speech comes from Clive Sirkin, chief marketing officer of Fortune 500 firm, Kimberly-Clark, responsible for global household names in the world of paper-based consumer products, such as Andrex and Kleenex.
